C3-L1 was a protocol droid, a type of class three droid designed for interacting with organic beings. The droid was owned by the Wookiee Busurra, who was an assistant to Loom Carplin, the Chief of Staff for the Alliance to Restore the Republic forces in Atrivis sector at some point between the Battle of Yavin and Battle of Hoth during the Galactic Civil War. As many Humans had difficulty understanding Busurra—the Wookiee was unable to speak Galactic Basic Standard—C3-L1 was his constant companion, translating his words for others to understand.
