R2-A5 was a white-and-green plated R2-series astromech droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton. The astromech droid served the Galactic Empire, and was programmed by the Empire for target acquisition and combat communications. Around the time of the Battle of Yavin, R2-A5 wandered the streets of Mos Eisley, a city on the planet Tatooine. R2-A5 coordinated starfighter attack vectors, and broadcasted target acquisition data to gunnery systems.
