Wang Yi was a doctor who lived in the space city of Fire in the Aakaash system, which was ruled by the Land & Sky Corporation, beyond the Galactic Republic.
Wang was born to a poor family and was extremely intelligent as a child, teaching himself while attending school and succeeding at an exam to enter the famous Xia Houde Medical University at fourteen years old with a full scholarship. He completed all of his academic studies at the age of twenty, graduating three years early and being invited to an apprenticeship at the prestigious Nirvana hospital in Fire's Dark Sky district two. He completed his apprenticeship one year ahead and was promoted by the hospital director as the manager of a new department, developing it into the hospital's premier department within years. In the same period, he met the love of his life and had a daughter as part of a thriving middle-class family.
At thirty-five years old, Wang was widely admired by other doctors and his superiors had high hopes for him, being among the top five practitioners in his hospital. When it received a patient severely afflicted by a hitherto unknown disease whose health rapidly deteriorated, doctors deemed the patient unsavable, but Wang dedicated his efforts to saving the patient in his own laboratory. While Wang analyzed the contents of the illness, the patient lived for a week before suddenly dying. Before he could perform an autopsy, the doctor was arrested, charged, and convicted by the authorities for the crime of "disregarding human life out of an overreach of ambition for his work." Wang became bankrupt and parted with his family, and he evaded debt by hiding alone in the wasteland of Dark Sky district nine.
Wang deduced that his patient had been recovering for a week until being deliberately poisoned, believing that the poison was an artificially engineered virus that directly targeted the genetic material, leading to the body's necrosis. The doctor realized that the patient was a member of the Ma family, one of the four great families of the Land & Sky Corporation, indicating that the targeting of Ma was part of a significant political feud. Wang recalled that the hospital's director and deputy director had given him hints not to help the dying patient, but he ignored them out of his focus on handling the peculiar disease, inadvertently making an enemy out of powerful political figures.
The middle-aged man wandered the dumps and occasionally performed medicine, keeping away from the authorities and living in a small cave. He neither harbored hatred nor forgot about the affair, instead living day-by-day with optimism in the dumps. He and his wife divorced, with their daughter, Wang Lu, remaining with the mother; the latter married Lei Yongxun, who was newly appointed Nirvana's hospital director and whose father was the director of Xia Moist Pharmaceuticals. Having lived in the dumps for five years, in 200 BBY, Wang came across the young Jedi Padawan Sean, who was heavily injured and comatose after a fight with the Security Bureau agent Xia Xi. Wang treated him for several days despite the Security Bureau having issued a bounty on the Jedi's head. When Sean awoke, Wang urged the young man to drink the congee he had made for him while it was hot and, when asked about the bounty, explained that he believed saving lives was the foremost duty of a doctor and deemed those that focused on the prospect of profit to be greedy gangsters.
