The Commerce Treaty of 1647 was a legal covenant of the Galactic Republic that, during times of war, could assure the neutrality of a group such as the Trade Federation, which controlled most of the interstellar shipping passing through the galaxy's Rim territories. During the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Senator Lott Dod of the Trade Federation continually invoked the treaty to counter accusations that the corporation was in league with the Confederacy due to doing business with them.
