During the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems launched a multi-week siege of the planet Devalok even though it held no strategic value. Eventually, the Galactic Republic arrived to fight off the Confederacy military, but it became clear the Republic would be forced to withdraw. The Republic did, however, manage to evacuate thousands of civilians aboard a capital ship.
