In 3649 BBY, the Galactic Senate of the Republic convened to elect a Supreme Chancellor as leader of the democratic government for a four-year term. Four years earlier, the Senate had unanimously elected Senator Dorian Janarus of Coruscant as the Supreme Chancellor. In 3649 BBY, at the expiration of the four-year term, the Senate decided he should remain in the position. The election was a small affair because the candidates feared assassination by the Sith Empire.
