The Inner Rim, originally known as the Rim, and also called the Inner Rim Planets, or the Inner Rim Territories, was a region of the galaxy between the Colonies and the Expansion Region.
The border of the Rim had thinner shape closer to the Corellian Run, while it formed a bulge to the north-east side. This phenomenon originated from the time when the neighboring Expansion Region was being aggressively explored and exploited spinward of the Run impoverishing its worlds and native species. After ecological and financial catastrophies, these worlds were not settled, but settlement turned spinward and northwards instead.
