Wood-moss

Wood-moss was a tough crop that grew in patches of mossy turf on the planet Ylesia. The herbivorous reek native to the world grazed on wood-moss as their main food source, developing powerful jaws and teeth to harvest it and cloven feet with front claws used to dig up the crop. Fiercely territorial, herds of reeks defended their patches of wood-moss to the death against rival herds, and this led to them evolving into fearsome combatants.

Wood-moss was also found on the Codian Moon—where ranchers had moved many herds of reek to harvest for meat by 22 BBY—but in far smaller quantities then on Ylesia. Due to the scarcity of wood-moss, the reek became even more aggressive and the ranchers eventually discovered that if starved for long enough, the herbivores could be forced to eat meat.
