The Cheems Sonic Chisel were commercially available sonic devices used to cut and shape gemstones. Invented by Mulus Cheems, a mineral analyst, the sonic chisel required skilled operators to shape gems successfully, as improper use could reduce valuable gemstones to worthless chips. Sales of the devices and training in their use funded much of Cheems' retirement.
