Nagai society was organized into a series of Circles prior to the invasion of their territory by the Tof. Each Circle was further sub-divided into a number of Sub-circles, and an individual Nagai's place within a Circle was determined by their birth. Their position within the Circle was a sign of status, with members of lower Sub-circles not being allowed to mate with members of higher levels. A Nagai could move up through the ranks of Sub-circles by displaying feats of physical prowess.
During the Nagai–Tof War, the system of Circles broke down, with Circles combining to survive the invasion and entire Sub-circles being eradicated by the Tofs. By the time of the Galactic Civil War, the Circles still existed but they were no longer the solid foundation upon which Nagai society had been built on. The loss of entire Sub-circles had resulted in individual raising in rank purely by default, and mating between the Sub-circles had become more common. Some Nagai talked of even abandoning the Circles altogether.
