The Cortez banking clan was an organization which, by 3643 BBY, was pushing for controversial new regulations that would render loan schemes in the criminal underworld obsolete. Consequently, several crime syndicates were looking for neutral representatives to protect their interests.
Around that year, an individual associated with one of the two opposing governments in the Cold War between the Galactic Republic and the reconstituted Sith Empire sent a companion of theirs to represent the syndicates. Using the syndicates' viscous reputations, their companion convinced the Cortez banking clan to abandon their regulation plans.
