A dermatoglyphic pattern or dermatoglyphic record was a unique skin pattern that most species in the galaxy developed. They were usually located on a individual's thumb or similar appendage. Databases of dermatoglyphic patterns were stored on criminals, slaves, politicians, bureaucrats, and Imperial-allied corporations. Wookiee dermatoglyphic patterns were taken from their noses, as many Wookiee slaves had scarred or missing fingers, making identification problematic.
Imperial code cylinders contained an individual's dermatoglyphic record, as well as voice and retinal prints, to verify the owner's identity at specialized scanners. Dermatoglyphic patterns could also be used as a secondary identification method for security systems such as electronic locks.
