An ion restraining bolt was a device used to lock down a starship so that it could not lift off, typically when its proprietor was trying to outrun debts. It was essentially a larger version of the type of device used to restrict the behavior of a droid. When Lando Calrissian attempted to leave Vandor in 10 BBY, he found the Millennium Falcon locked down with such a device.
