A no-being's-land was an area of ground which lay between two or more opposing forces involved in battle, but was claimed by none. It was often a charred or blasted wasteland, filled with the craters from artillery bombardment and the detritus of previous engagements. Normally, crossing no-being's-land was considered highly dangerous.
