Pontifex was a religious title used by the Brotherhood of Cognizance. Centuries prior to 22 BBY, it was common for a Pontifex to legalise marriages. The Pontifex Maxiron Agolerga legalised the marriage between Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker in 22 BBY, after the practice had not been performed for 300 years.
