The ribcage was the curved wall of ribs that surrounded and protected the chest area in some species, including Humans. In that species, the ribcage consisted of twelve pairs of ribs. When Darth Vader was put into his suit of armor, his ribcage was temporarily removed so the medical droids could install the organ implants that were needed to ensure his survival.
