The spine rat was a creature known to the Empire of the Hand coalition. In 19 ABY, during a battle between the Empire of the Hand and the Cavrilhu Pirates on the Unknown Regions planet Rhigar, the cadets of the Syndic Mitth'raw'nuruodo training academy hid in a forest within the academy as part of a sneak attack on the invading pirates. While waiting for the invaders, the Human cadet Jagged Fel compared the students of the Empire of the Hand academy's hiding to that of the spine rat's in a burrow.
