A Wookiee honor family comprised a Wookiee's true friends and boon companions, under a special bond of friendship that joined one Wookiee with a group of other Wookiees, or even with members of other species.

Members of honor families pledged to lay down their lives for each other, and they extended this protection to the honor families of each individual member.

Chewbacca the Wookiee had a closely-intertwined relationship with Han Solo, such that there was no human word for that type of relationship, and considered himself head of a Wookiee Honor Family, willing to die for his partner. He later considered his companions, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, to be part of his honor family.
