Lowlands (Lan Barell)

The lowlands were an area on the planet Lan Barell noted for frequent sandstorms, volcanoes and earthquakes. The air in the lowlands was unbreathable by Humans due to the toxic contaminants and volcanic ash, but the native Qieg had no trouble. Much of the life in the lowlands was microscopic, but some small insects and reptiles survived in the conditions.

There were many mines located in the lowlands, usually operated by Qieg miners living in settlements around the mine. Sealed buildings allowed Humans to live and work in the mines, but the populations of the mining settlements were largely Qieg.

The Qieg maintained shrines devoted to their religion in the lowlands, tended by monks. When Qieg were about to become adults, they had to trek to one of the shrines alone as part of the passage rite.
