The Shard Memorial was a monument built on a peaceful, if remote and relatively unknown, planet, as a tribute to Alderaan, a Core Worlds planet destroyed by the Galactic Empire's Death Star battlestation in 0 BBY. It was a jutting slab of light blue crystal placed in a grassy field of a region of hills.
The memorial served as a place of remembrance, and in 2 ABY, Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan's royal family visited it. Kneeling before the monument, the Alderaanian noble was reminded of the crystalline walls of the Aldera Royal Palace, the House of Organa's residence that had existed on Alderaan.
