The Tatooine Howler, also known as a "desert wampa" due to its resemblance to the ice wampa of Hoth, was a creature native to Tatooine. They were large, shaggy creatures with bulky builds and curling horns. Their dirty yellow fur helped them blend in with their desert surroundings. Only their teeth, claws, and horns were visible, but barely enough to blow their cover (especially in sandstorms). When seen from afar, Howlers were easily mistaken for banthas. They were dangerous, extremely intelligent, and unpredictable, but were also very rare. Most people considered them legends or rumors designed to keep the curious away from secret smuggler bases in the deep desert.

When hunting, howlers made loud howling noises to scare prey. They herded them towards rock cul-de-sacs or similar killing grounds. They dried portions of each kill in the hot air and buried them in the sand. If prey was scarce, then howlers would return to their secret cache of food. While they preferred fresh meat, they never ventured too far away from their caches.

While it possessed characteristics of a wampa, such as tusks and fur, genetic testing proved that the Tatooine howler had no actual relation to it at all.
