IG-88A was one of five identical IG-88 assassin droids that, according to legend, were created by Holowan Laboratories during a secret Imperial project known as the Project Phlutdroid. After its activation, IG-88A and its cohorts killed their creators and planned to overthrow organic life. Meanwhile, IG-88B played its part by becoming a bounty hunter to draw attention away from IG-88A.
