Z-3PO was one of several 3PO-series protocol droids that were aboard a starship attacked by pirates near Wild Space. The only survivor of the attack was the human child Pax Maripher, who was found by Z-3PO, along with fellow protocol droids G-3PO and B-3PO. The droids raised Maripher on the derelict, abandoned starship for around fifteen years before he was rescued.
