Attack on Tanalorr

The attack on Tanalorr, also known as the invasion of Tanalorr, was a surprise attack by the Nihil marauders on the planet Tanalorr during the High Republic Era. The attack occurred while a verification was being carried out to decide if Tanalorr would be suitable to house a strong Jedi presence, consisting of the training of initiates on the world. Despite a spirited defense by the Jedi—led by renowned Jedi Knight Dagan Gera and Jedi Council member Oppo Rancisis—the Nihil overwhelmed the Jedi's defenses.

The battle was a victory for the Nihil over the Jedi, as the force with which the marauders attacked and the difficulty of reaching the planet, extending to the impossibility of communication through the nebula that concealed the world, led the Jedi Council to decide to abandon Tanalorr altogether, which deeply enraged Gera and led to his betrayal of the Order. How the Nihil discovered Tanalorr, however, remained a mystery to the Jedi. Under the belief that the Nihil must have obtained one of the Abyss compasses—the only devices capable of navigating the deadly Koboh Abyss to reach Tanalorr—the Jedi Council ordered the destruction of all compasses following the abandonment of Tanalorr.
