The Ackbar Refinement was a space combat tactic devised by Admiral Gial Ackbar. It built on the Kenobi Offensive of drawing starships out of formation using sniping attacks. Ackbar contended that where possible, battles against Imperial forces could be fought in conditions where communications interference reduced the effectiveness of coordination between vessels, either through the use of pre-planted particle-emitters or natural phenomenon like quasars. Alliance ships, used to inferior communications compared to their Imperial counterparts would then have an advantage. To further their advantage, the Ackbar Refinement called for each Alliance vessel to have a codename. As long as each Alliance ship remained in communication range with one other vessel, commands to specific ships as indicated by the codename could be passed down the line until reaching the target.
