Merit adoptive

Legends. This article is part of Legends: the expanded-universe stories that Lucasfilm set apart from canon in 2014.

Merit adoptives were Chiss who became part of a Chiss family whose bloodline they did not originally belong to. All Chiss warriors were made merit adoptives of a Chiss family when they were accepted into the Chiss Expansionary Fleet or Chiss Defense Fleet. The rank would be lost at the end of one's military service if that person did not gain the rank of Trial-born first by being "born to trial." The Ruling Families selected merit adoptives in a manner analogously to how the Defense Hierarchy selected senior officers to join their ranks.
