Infrared was a form of radiation emitted by animal organisms. Although it could be felt as heat, it could only be seen by certain species. For example, the Chiss's visible spectrum edged a bit into the infrared. Humans, however, could not see it with the naked eye, and had to resort to specialized equipment to display and measure it. Baktoid Armor Workshop's DSD1 dwarf spider droid also could see into the infrared spectrum with their red photoreceptors.
