A mining rig was a type of mining technology deployable both on planet surfaces and in space to mine minerals.
During the High Republic Era, at least one such platform was located in the Hetzal system, when it was destroyed by the Great Hyperspace Disaster.
During the Imperial Era in 2 BBY, the Galactic Empire deployed multiple mining rigs to the surface of the planet Ghorman, including at Jel-Novi and Leequa, to gouge-mine the planet for its kalkite, a mineral needed for Emperor Palpatine's "energy project."
