Mondeo Modernism was a design craze that swept through the Core Worlds over a century before the Galactic Civil War. The fad spread to art, architecture, and clothing design. It emphasized the use of streamlined contours, elliptical forms, and whimsical embellishments. The craze burned brightly for several decades but eventually fizzled.
The WA-7 waitress droid, produced by GoCorp and its subsidiary Utilitech, was introduced at a time when the Core Worlds were gripped in the fever of the Mondeo Modernist design movement. Its streamlined design suggested the shape of a humanoid female. It also featured dark-red decorative elements that gave it an even more fanciful silhouette, such as a skirt and a bonnet that projected curved fins behind the head. The droid moved on a unipod wheel, a concession to the flightiness of Mondeo Modernism that proved quite practical.
Years later, many WA-7 service units were still in service and became popcultural artifacts of the Mondeo Modernist era. By 22 BBY, the WA-7 was considered a throwback to this earlier era of style and design. This made FLO, the droid waitress working at Dexter's Diner, seem quite at home in Dexter Jettster's retro-style diner.
Shortly before the Clone Wars, the droid manufacturer AccuTronics briefly attempted to play off the retro-popularity of the WA-7 with the release of the TDL-501 unipod waitress droid. The TDL-501 was met with modest success before succumbing to the same changing tastes that doomed the original WA-7.
