The Imperial Trench was a part of Ilum where the Galactic Empire gouged out a large portion of the planet as part of their mining operations of the planet's kyber crystals. It was visible from orbit by 14 BBY.

The trench was later used by the First Order to house the Starkiller Base superweapon.
