Ethain was the primary star of the Arda system, a part of the Back Reach area of the Gordian Reach sector within the Trans-Hydian portion of the Outer Rim Territories. The hyperlane known as the Ardan Cross connected it to the Feldwes and Kalishik systems, and another hyperlane linked it to the Capella system.
Ethain was orbited by the planets Arda I, Arda II and Arda III. The star ejected solar flares that affected the nearby planet of Arda I, which was subject to geomagnetic storms that could generate communications interference.
