Tinebacks were large creatures native to the rocky planet Ruhnuk, with stouts and spiked tails. These creatures were notorious burrowers and roamed from canyons to clifftops in groups called "mixes," which ranged in size from small packs to large mobs. They were known to nest near areas with shallow but plentiful water. The Waterworks was a popular choice for them. The Tinebacks have several subspecies such as the "Knock-Kneed," the "Dulcet Tone," and the variety of the famed Essa'Mu.

They were known to prey on the Irewing, thanks to their scent being particularly attractive to the strong olfactory senses of the Tineback. As a result, Tinebacks were capable of leaping great distances, as well as being able to do so high into the air. Tinebacks also rarely fed on Dewbacks due to their nutrient-rich meat, but only exceptionally fast and strong Tinebacks were capable of hunting them.

Ash'ad beastmasters were known to train them. However, capturing them was notoriously difficult. In order to restrain Tinebacks, electrified durasteel nets were used in conjunction with tranquilizers.
