The Rand Ecliptic was a starship in the service of the Galactic Empire shortly before the Battle of Yavin. After attending an Imperial Academy, the pilots Biggs Darklighter and Derek Klivian both received their commissions aboard the vessel. Klivian, who was secretly undercover as an agent of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, incited a mutiny, assisting Darklighter, who had been serving as first mate, to defect to the Rebel Alliance.
