It was published by Dorling Kindersley on October 4, 2019 as a part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker multimedia project. The book, which acted as an updated edition of the 2015 reference book titled Ultimate Star Wars, features info on various Star Wars characters, locations, weapons, and vehicles. The book features info on the sequel trilogy and Star Wars Resistance. An updated version Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy released on November 19, 2024.
