The ripper was an Old Republic weapon designed to bypass personal energy shields by firing physical projectiles. The ripper fired many pieces of shrapnel at a target, in a similar manner to the flechette weapons later used during the Galactic Civil War. The shrapnel fired by the ripper penetrated deep into the target's body, causing additional damage.
A variant of this weapon was the Mandalorian ripper, which was also a pistol designed to bypass personal energy shields.
