The scan grid was a piece of mining equipment that was occasionally used for more nefarious purposes, such as torture and interrogation, and as such was sometimes known as an interrogation array. In some of these instances, the sight of the device was so horrifying to the target that it often yielded the interrogator's desired results without even being switched on.
