Matari, along with Voru, was a god of the ancient Coruscanti—the residents of the Core Worlds planet Coruscant. By 232 BBY, during the time the human female Lina Soh—a native of the planet Daghee—served as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, a male pet targon she had was named after Matari, while his sister was named after Voru. In 231 BBY, the reporter Rhil Dairo reflected on Soh's reputation and her impact on the the galaxy, noting the symbolic significance of her targons' names and the statement it made.
