The Kira system was located in the Kira sector of the Expansion Region and the Trailing Sectors, in grid square N-16 of the Standard Galactic Grid. Hyperspace routes linked it to the Bacrana, Kalinda, Pax, and Wroona systems.
The Kira system fell within the borders of the New Republic in 9 ABY. In 34 ABY, several screens aboard Chandrila Star Line's Star Cruiser Halcyon displayed a partial map of the galaxy that indicated the Kira system's position.
