New Republic

The New Republic (4 ABY–34 ABY), also known as the New Galactic Republic or simply the Republic, was a representative democratic republic that was presided over by a Chancellor as its elected leader and the New Republic Senate which was comprised of senators representing their member worlds from across the galaxy under the Charter of the New Republic. While the ecumenopolis Coruscant retained its historic administrative status, the Senate shifted from one world to another on a rotating basis. However, the Republic was never able to achieve the galactic scope of its predecessors.

With the death of Emperor Palpatine at the Battle of Endor, the Alliance to Restore the Republic founded the New Republic, fulfilling its mandate to restore the Galactic Republic and a return of freedom. The Galactic Senate convened on Chandrila and Mon Mothma was elected as the first Chancellor and strove to end its struggle. After failed peace talks with Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, the Senate briefly relocated to Nakadia, while the New Republic Defense Force drove the Empire from its holdings as Counselor Gallius Rax on Jakku, led the Imperial fleet in a last stand against the Republic fleet. In its aftermath, the Empire began to collapse, allowing Grand Vizier Mas Amedda to surrender and signed the Galactic Concordance, officially ending the conflict and Imperial rule.

The New Republic characterised Palpatine regime as having been illegal and illegitimate while the Republic turned its attention to reshaping galactic politics, with member worlds raising their own planetary defense forces as its military was partially demilitarized, relying on egalitarian policies to remain on friendly terms with neutral star systems and ex-Imperial governors. The New Republic would eventually move some governmental functions back to Coruscant, as the world's infrastructure was already well-attuned to handling the administrative and bureaucratic of a large galactic power.

While the Sith were seamlessly gone, the Old Empire had dwindled into the Imperial Remnant while the prospect of Grand Admiral Thrawn's return to the galaxy loomed. Eventually the remnants of the Empire regathered as the First Order and began a secret military buildup against the New Republic.

Years later, the New Republic faced intense political deadlock between the Populists, who favoured planetary sovereignty, and the Centrists, who favoured a strong central authority. As a result of the Napkin Bombing and the Amaxine warrior crisis, the senate moved to institute the role of First Senator, a position that would replace the largely ceremonial Chancellor as the highest office of the New Republic. Over the course of the proceedings, the Populist candidate, Leia Organa was largely ruined politically following the public exposure of her parentage by Ransolm Casterfo. After her fall from political grace, the new Populist Candidate, Tai-Lin Garr was assassinated. Though innocent, Casterfo was framed for the assassination by operatives of the First Order. In 29 ABY, the Centrists seceded from the New Republic, becoming the public face of the otherwise secret First Order.

During this time, Senator Leia Organa formed her own private military force, the Resistance, due to the Senate's unwillingness to take action against the First Order and risk provoking another war. Despite this effort, the First Order destroyed its seat of government on Hosnian Prime, causing the New Republic to virtually cease to exist or function, leading to open galactic war. The Resistance was eventually able to deal a decisive blow to the First Order at the Battle of Exegol after rallying together a Citizens' Fleet. A galaxy-wide uprising against the First Order then erupted, giving rise to the hope of the New Republic's return.
