Commander-in-Chief
Canon Legends version → Linked from 100 articles
Commander-in-Chief was the title held by a person who exercised supreme control over a military force, typically reserved for a Head of State of a government. During the Clone Wars, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine was the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. The Kaleesh cyborg warlord General Grievous held the title of Supreme Martial Commander and, therefore, acted as commander-in-chief of the Separatist Droid Armies during the Clone Wars.
During the Imperial Era within the Alliance to Restore the Republic, it was Chancellor Mon Mothma who held that title. Recognized as a military leader even before being ultimately elevated to the position of Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet, the Sith warlord Darth Vader acted as the de facto Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Armed Forces due to being empowered by Emperor Palpatine.
