Praleena Pring was the daughter of Dandamont Pring, Imperial consul-general of the planet Bothawui.

She had a secret affair with a minor bureaucrat assigned to her father's estate. She didn't know that her father intended for her to marry the captain of the Dismay.

During the soirée where her father announced the engagement—with plans for her to leave in the Dismay the next day for the wedding—an Rebel operative approached her, saying that her lover invited her to defect to the Rebel Alliance. She found an oportunity to escape her fate and defied her father. They took advantage of the ensuing confusion (which almost destroyed the party) and had an eventful exit; the guards hesitated to fire at the Rebels while the girl was with them.

While the Captain did not learn that Pring defected to the Rebellion, he was not happy with the development. The Consul-General dismissed the incident as young love, claiming that his daughter would return once she thought things through.
