Legends. This article is part of Legends: the expanded-universe stories that Lucasfilm set apart from canon in 2014.

Shadow crowns were headpieces worn by Sorcerers of Rhand. They were made of a mineral called Nihil smokestone that gave them the ability to act as a mental transmitter and receiver. Sorcerers used these crowns to control Pawns that had been imprinted with smokestone. When a Sorcerer wore a shadow crown, they gained the ability to receive the collective sensory input of their Pawns. Only a Force-user could use a shadow crown, but any being could be influenced by it assuming they had smokestone implants or cranial harnesses.

Blessed Toxmalb wore a shadow crown buried beneath his skin that could control up to a hundred Pawns.

Former Sorcerer of Rhand Cronal crafted his own shadow crowns out of meltmassif from the planet Mindor, and wore a transmitter crown called the "Sunset crown".
