A survival beacon was used to summon assistance by emitting a signal that could be detected by starships. They were generally employed by scouts. The survivors of a New Republic scout training mission that stumbled across a real Imperial base had to use a survival beacon to be rescued after the cadet leader, Talek Var, used their scout vessel to destroy the Imperial base.
