New Republic

The New Republic (4 ABY–28 ABY), sometimes referred as the New Galactic Republic, the Second Galactic Republic or simply as the Republic, was a democratic union that served as the restoration of the Galactic Republic that was replaced by the Galactic Empire, with the New Republic being established by the Rebel Alliance. The New Republic was referred to politically as being a union of planets, a confederation or a coalition. Chief of State was the title of the leader of the New Republic, while the New Republic Senate included senators representing the various member worlds across the galaxy. The Combined Defense Forces of the New Republic were the integrated military forces charged with the defense of the New Republic. The New Republic was protected by the New Jedi Order, which was established by Luke Skywalker, just as the Old Republic was once protected by the Jedi Order of old.

Established after the death of Emperor Palpatine at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, the New Republic was founded on the same principles that the Old Republic endured under for thousands of generations. Mon Mothma was elected as the first Chief of State and continued the Galactic Civil War by fighting the fractured Empire. However, Grand Admiral Thrawn would reignite the Empire's offensive when he returned from the Unknown Regions; his campaign came to a sudden end when Thrawn was assassinated, and the Empire entered a power vacuum once more. In 11 ABY, the reborn Palpatine regrouped the many warlords and loyal forces to fight for his envisioned Dark Empire, but was stopped by the New Republic and was at last truly dead, the Empire in its death throes. Nevertheless, remnants of the Empire continued to persist through Imperial splinter factions, as the last true vestiges of the Empire regrouped and retreated into a so-called "Imperial Remnant" on the very edges of the galaxy.

Leia Organa Solo replaced Mothma as the New Republic slowly made advances over the Empire, confining it to the Outer Rim Territories. Organa Solo also oversaw the New Republic during a diplomatic crisis with the fanatical Duskhan League, an alliance of Yevethan worlds in the Koorncht Cluster, during which Organa Solo extended the powers of the Chief of State. Due to discord within the Senate, especially between the traditional and pro-Imperial senators, Organa Solo took an indefinite leave of absence, with Ponc Gavrisom chosen as the caretaker Chief of State. Under Gavrison, the New Republic shifted towards decentralization of power, reducing the Senate's role. In 19 ABY, the Caamas Document Crisis threatened to begin a civil war in the New Republic after the uncovering of the Caamas Document, this ended with the signing of a peace treaty between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant, ending the Galactic Civil War. Organa Solo returned to the Senate, only to resign in 23 ABY. In the subsequent election, Borsk Fey'lya was elected Chief of State.

During the invasion by the extra-galactic Yuuzhan Vong, the Senate was paralyzed by incompetence and cowardice and failed to take it seriously until too late. The Yuuzhan Vong made quick progress, conquering huge portions of the galaxy. Fey'lya sacrificed himself during the Battle of Coruscant. Pwoe proclaimed himself Chief of State and attempted to make a separate failed peace treaty with the Peace Brigade and Supreme Overlord Shimrra, however he was never officially recognized. The Senate eventually reconvened on Mon Calamari and after a long campaign elected Cal Omas, who established the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances, a new entity that unified what was left of the New Republic, the Imperial Remnant and the Hapes Consortium.
