A black dwarf was a class of dark, dead dwarf star. When white dwarfs became very cold because of extreme age, they no longer gave off detectable light or heat, appearing black. This process took billions of years.
The exogorth Sy-O was born near one such star with an iron core, and fed off of the energy that it emitted.
