A shift shield, also spelled shift-shield, was a type of shield used to protect starships from meteoroids. In 0 BBY, Darth Vader captured and destroyed the CR90 corvette Tantive IV. In order to hide his actions from the Imperial Senate, Vader had a distress message sent that blamed the destruction of the corvette on the failure of its shift shields.
