Gy'lan was an addictive consumable available during the High Republic Era. While operating as a bounty hunter, the Bivall Quin Carree—who had been abandoned by her lover Twi'lek Nihil Tempest Runner Lourna Dee in 230 BBY—became addicted to the substance reed. In 228 BBY, Dee—who at that point was also operating as a bounty hunter—encountered the Bivall and shot her, unaware it was actually Carree.
Dee attempted to help heal the injuries Carree had suffered once she discovered it was her, but the Bivall began to struggle and stress she needed to return to her ship. After the Twi'lek refused to let her, the Sephi Tey Sirrek—an associate of Dee's—asked the Bivall about what she was using, listing gy'lan alongside the spice ryll, and the substance filaxian. When Carree began shivering in response, Sirrek pressed further, stating that they could recognize the signs of addiction. Eventually, the Bivall admitted she was taking reed.
