Dark Trooper project

The Dark Trooper project, or the dark trooper program was a Republic Special Weapons Group and later Imperial Department of Military Research program whose goal was to create a force of soldiers known as "Dark Troopers" for the Galactic Empire. It was originally launched as a way to supply humans with a new armor, as well as giving cybernetics to treat injured clone troopers. Indeed, the first form of the Dark Trooper came from taking clone troopers and providing them with cybernetics, seeing organic parts as a weakness.

Also at this time, the DT-series sentry droid was a combat droid developed by the project, DT standing for Dark Trooper. The DT-series was created using ST-series military strategic analysis and tactics droid technology and experimental or abandoned droid designs. The beginning of the Dark Trooper project was mentioned by Clone Commander Neyo in the survival compendium "Neyo's Almanac of Clankers."

The experimental Phase II Dark Trooper was evaluated by the Imperial Military during the Galactic Civil War. The DT sentry droids also continued to see use throughout the war. By the third generation of the dark trooper, it was decided the pilot was the final weakness in the design. Thus, it was decided to make the dark trooper a type of battle droid. A platoon of third generation dark troopers was used by Moff Gideon's Imperial remnant in the year 9 ABY. IDMR scientists were stationed aboard Gideon's light cruiser to maintain these dark troopers, which were held in cold storage due to their excessive power requirements.
