The Imperial Remnant, alternatively capitalized as the Imperial remnant and also known as the Remnant Empire or neo-Imperial forces—was a large neo-Imperialist polity made up of several remnant factions of the Galactic Empire that refused to comply with the terms of the Galactic Concordance that effectively dissolved the Empire in 5 ABY. Believed by New Republic Intelligence to be nothing more than diffuse patchwork of stalward Imperial warlords unable to pose a threat to the New Republic, debates raged over whether the Imperial Remnant should be considered a singular polity or a number of unrelated factions. Secretly however, the neo-Imperial forces were far more cohesive then the New Republic believed, with the various surviving Imperial warlords and potentates transmitting into a Shadow Council to coordinate their efforts while maintaining the illusion of being unorganized remnant warlords, thereby hiding their strength.
Upon Grand Admiral Thrawn's return from his exile in the far galaxy, Thrawn waged a campaign against New Republic with Imperial forces, but was eventually defeated by the New Republic Defense Force. Later, Chalm Plesk, a historian from the University of Coruscant, wrote the highly anticipated book "The Last War Against the Galactic Empire: On Deployment with the New Republic Fleet" which covered Thrawn's campaign, but its publication was blocked by military figures in the New Republic until the Hosnian Cataclysm. Beaumont Kin would later mention the book as well as Thrawn's Campaign in his own book "The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire"
