Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game was published by West End Games in October 1987. It contains rules and guidelines for gamemasters and players, character templates, tips on how to design adventures and an example adventure called "Rebel Breakout."

On July 5, 2018, Fantasy Flight Games reissued Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game alongside The Star Wars Sourcebook as part of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition.
